Exhibition
Weds 01 Sept – Sun 17 Oct 2021
In 2021 Iraq participated for the first time in the Venice Architecture Biennale, with Rashad Salim’s project Ark Re-imagined. The 'Expeditionary Pavilion’ returns to the origins of Iraq’s architectural legacy, celebrating the vernacular architecture, watercraft, and ecology of the Tigris-Euphrates river system. Salim’s expeditionary art practice engages artisans and interdisciplinary co-researchers to explore traditional boat-building, architecture and craft practices – on the brink of extinction after decades of conflict, climate change and most recently COVID-19.
