The Ingmar Bergman Chair on Film and Theatre is one of Mexico's most prestigious academic initiatives. Its year-long program is dedicated to researching, nurturing and amplifying ideas and connections between students, artists and the general public. Based in Mexico City and a part of UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), it acts as a laboratory where participants can engage in creative and critical spaces. Established in 2010, more than 120,000 people have taken part in its activities, learning, discussing and reflecting on contemporary performing arts and cinema.
During the pandemic, some of the most pressing questions guiding the program centre around the responsibilities of cultural institutions in a time of crisis: How can they become spaces for the construction of justice? How can they better support their communities? How to bring encouragement and relief to our collective imagination?
